Tim Armitage

Investment Strategist
London

What attracted you to a career in wealth management?

20 years ago I was a full-time professional musician when I decided to study an economics degree in my spare time, purely for my own interest. But the more I studied the more interested I became in the world of finance, and before long my hobby and professional aspirations had switched places. I started my career at State Street Associates, a partnership between State Street Global Markets and a group of academics from Harvard and MIT, before moving to Blackrock to focus on risk management and portfolio construction. A few years later I joined the multi-asset investment team at Legal & General, and after seven years there as a fund manager and strategist I joined Quilter Cheviot as an investment strategist. There are many similarities between fund management and wealth management, but being able to see the direct positive impact we can have on our clients’ futures is something that really attracted me to making the switch.

How do you approach your role on a daily basis?

We are fortunate to have a team of talented analysts at Quilter Cheviot who pride themselves on choosing the best companies or funds for our investment managers to include in their clients’ portfolios. But asset allocation is also hugely important for client outcomes, and I am focused on ensuring both the long-term asset class mix and any tactical deviations from that mix are appropriate for the market environment we find ourselves in.

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work, my three sons keep me very busy! I’m still a keen musician and play in a covers band as well as writing and releasing my own music under a pseudonym.

The value of your investments and the income from them can fall and you may not recover what you invested.
