What attracted you to a career in wealth management?
Making a difference in people's lives and alleviating financial worries has always been something I find incredibly rewarding. When asked why I am so passionate about a career as a financial planner, my response is simple: I get to meet fascinating people, hear their life stories in a relaxed environment, and learn about their aspirations for the future. The advice I provide can truly make a difference. Clients often share views with me that they wouldn't even share with close relations. Over time, clients become friends, and we build trusted, long-term relationships, often becoming one of the most important relationships in their lives. What's not to like?
With over 35 years in the profession, my passion remains undiminished. The role presents new challenges every day and tests my abilities, ensuring that I am constantly learning. With the continuous changes in our field, I remain committed to supporting and helping both clients and colleagues whenever they need my assistance.
How do you approach your role on a daily basis?
My focus is on the continuous development and improvement of our services to clients and making Quilter Cheviot the best place to work for my team and colleagues. Given that significant change is always present, I carefully balance the activities required to deliver for clients and the firm each day. Prioritizing these activities helps maintain our high client satisfaction scores and ensures continuous improvement, which is crucial for keeping our clients delighted with our services over the long term.
Our discerning clients expect us to constantly improve, and acting on feedback from them and our client-facing teams is critical to our success. The success of our clients and the firm are inextricably linked. Additionally, my obligations as a member of the Executive Committee are important to ensure the business is managed and governed within the requirements of the FCA. I work closely with my management team on a daily basis to support their team needs, as well as the needs of clients and key stakeholders, to keep us on track to be the best high net worth client advisory business in the UK.
What are your interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I am a father to four children, two of whom are now adults. We are a very close family and regularly catch up together. My teenage daughters frequently need 'Dad's or Mum's taxi,' so we invest a lot of time in family needs. We enjoy taking short trips together within Britain, enjoying long walks in the fabulous areas we explore. In recent years, we have been trying to holiday with the whole family in warmer climates, which is very important to me. Socializing with friends and family takes up parts of most weekends.
Personally, I like to stay active to combat the effects of middle age and have a passion for reading history, especially war history. I also enjoy watching rugby, whether it's local matches or attending international games. My goal is to attend a match in Rome, as it's the only Six Nations venue where I haven't yet seen England win. When long weekends allow, I can usually be found in St. Ives, Cornwall, enjoying coastal and beach walks, followed by a good pub lunch, regardless of the weather.
