The hospice movement has been one of the great success stories of the charity sector since the first hospice, St Christopher’s House, was founded in 1967. The movement has become a world leader in palliative care and has shown a remarkable ability to adapt over the last 50 years. Today, the UK has over 220 hospices with a turnover of over £1.5bn, of which only around 30% of the funding comes from the government. Despite the remarkable success, it has not all been plain sailing. A case in point is Rowcroft Hospice, in 2016 the charity faced a significant funding crisis and was in danger of closing. In this session Charles and Jonathan explored how to turn around an organisation in a challenging financial position, how Rowcroft Hospice has adapted to the pandemic and how the landscape has changed post-pandemic.
