We are sensory animals stimulated by what we see, hear, touch, taste and smell. Our senses evolved to trigger a move from immediate danger. A frog being slowly boiled alive is a metaphor for our inability to react to gradual change, depressingly reminiscent of the climate crisis.
Would triggering our senses then spark change?
We feel at ease, even inspired at times, when we have pleasant sensory experiences and successful design processes can play on this.
Engineers are now creatively incorporating solar technology into existing areas, like the top of multi-story carparks, on landfills and on decommissioned industrial plants. Artists are turning the ‘hide-it’ philosophy on its head. Next year, Land Art Generator plans to unveil the 100-foot tall “Arch of Time” in a Houston park. Made from black solar panels, the arch will provide shade while generating energy to power 40 nearby homes. The installation will also act as a clock, projecting the sun’s rays in alternating colours. This beautiful sensory experience will provide clean energy and inspire wonder for a post-carbon truth.
