Your individual requirements are paramount to our investment managers.

We believe the best returns come from a flexible approach so we do not restrict ourselves to one investment style. We have a house view that runs throughout the business, to which our investment managers align themselves.

Understanding your needs

Among the first topics for discussion with your dedicated investment manager will be your personal circumstances, knowledge, understanding and requirements, including your overall wealth, lifestyle, time horizon and tax affairs, as well as any liabilities. Once we have a good understanding of your unique situation, we will use our investment process to design and propose a suitable bespoke investment strategy.

Your dedicated investment manager

To inform decisions around your portfolio, investment managers participate in the investment process, from conducting company visits and internal discussions, to analysing external broker research and assessing investment themes. Your investment manager is also guided by our investment committees, made up of experienced professionals who meet regularly to discuss the investment environment and any opportunities and risks that have been identified.

Asset allocation

We create your portfolio using our multi-asset approach to investing, which provides us with the flexibility to meet your individual needs over the long term. Our asset allocation process is forward looking, dynamic and not based solely on backward-looking statistics. In order to construct portfolios effectively and manage risk, we divide assets into three building blocks, each of which plays a complementary role:

  • Diversifier assets that reduce or offset equity risk. They may include precious metals, unleveraged commercial property funds and some hedge funds.
  • Equities and lower grade corporate bonds, private equity funds, industrial commodities and some hedge funds.
  • Low-risk liquid assets, including government bonds, high-quality corporate bonds and cash.

Investment selection

Our UK and International Stock Committees draw on the expertise of our in-house research team to identify the best quality companies available at attractive valuations. Our researchers cover global sectors, combining detailed company analyses with regular meetings with senior-level management at the companies we invest in.

We have the expertise to invest directly in specific equities and bonds. This approach gives us more freedom and control to implement our investment ideas efficiently and cost-effectively.

Third-party funds

We select third-party funds where necessary, delegating the implementation of investment ideas to an external team who specialise in these areas. Our size gives us buying power, enabling us to reduce the cost of fund investing.

Our Investment Funds Committee determines the selection of third party funds. It is the committee’s policy to provide investment managers with a diverse collection of funds spanning major global markets, across the market-capitalisation spectrum, managed under various style biases and with differing risk profiles.

Funds are selected according to Quilter Cheviot’s investment philosophy and process, involving quantitative and qualitative analysis. We place significant importance on meeting individual fund managers and their teams. These funds are rigorously analysed and reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Corporate governance

We invest in companies with high standards of corporate governance – those who prioritise the interests of shareholders and other stakeholders over those of management. We monitor the actions, policies and decisions of the boards of companies we invest in and participate in voting at shareholder meetings. This helps to ensure your interests as a shareholder are protected.
